We have a new feature on Draynor. TheRuneScape HiScores. It shows you the progress you have made in each skill and how much you have left until you level up or reach level 99.

Defence(spelled Defense inRuneScape Classic; sometimes abbreviated asDef) is one of the primary combatskillsthat grants players protection in all forms ofcombat. For this reason, Defence is one of the skills that will raise thecombat levelof a player regardless of other skill levels.

The higher the Defence level, the fewer successful blows an opponent will land against the player, this applies to all combat styles used against the player. Defence is thus a vital skill for enduring attacks for long periods of time, and can be extremely helpful against opponents with highAttack,Ranged,Magicor powerful Summoning miliars.

A players Defence level also determines which equipment he or she is able to wear, as most pieces ormouror other equipment have a Defence level requirement.

The current minimum requirement to be ranked (at approximately rank 805,555) on thehiscoresfor Defence is level 15. As of 10 May 2012, there are 101,885 current members that have achievedlevel 99in Defence.

Defence plays an important role in all forms of combat. The higher a players Defence level, the more likely the opponent is to miss an attack, dealing 0 damage. Defence level or defence bonuses play no part in reducing damage taken from a successful blow, onlydamage soakingworks for that purpose.

Defence can be trained in combat using any of the three combat styles:Magic,MeleeorRanged. TheConstitutionskill also receives some experience, but it will be equal to the damage dealt divided by 7.5 regardless of combat or attack style. For example, if a player hits a 30 with melee, then they will receive 4 Constitution experience, in addition to the 12 experience in Defence.

If a player hits an opponent while on Defensiveattack style, chosen on the Combat intece, the damage dealt is divided by 2.5 and that amount of experience is given to the Defence skill. In other words, you receive Defence experience equal to 40% of the damage dealt. For example, if a player hits a 10, then he will receive 4 Defence experience. The Defensive attack style is available with all weapons besides thedwarven army axeand also when fighting barehanded.

If a player fights with the controlled attack style, then whatever damage they deal will be divided by 7.5 and given to the players Strength, Attack and Defence experience.

It is worth noting that the Defensive stance gives an invisible +3 boost to Defence level, and the Controlled stance gives an invisible +1 boost to Defence as well as Attack and Strength.

Similarly to Melee, you can earn Defence experience when attacking with Ranged by using the Longrange attack style, which splits experience equally between Ranged and Defence. 2 Ranged and Defence experience will be earned for each 10 damage dealt.

Defence can be trained while training Magic when casting offensive spells by toggling the defensive casting option in the lower left corner of the spells menu. 1 Defence experience (as well as 1.333 Magic experience) will be awarded for every 10 points of damage dealt. The experience awarded for casting the spell will not be affected, and will only be awarded to Magic.

Players can get Defence experience as a reward for completing certain quests for a total of 166,037 experience. There are also lots of quests that allows the player to choose the skill that will receive an experience reward.

Experience lamps, gained through tasks and random events can be used to grant experience to any skill. Players can also trade points gained in certainactivitiesfor experience in Defence level. Other ways to get reward experience in Defence is through theDragonkin lamp,penguin points,Tears of Guthixand by completingCourt Caseswith a successful defence.

TheBrawling gloves (melee)provide 50% bonus experience whilst training on any of theMeleeskills (Defence,StrengthandAttack) using the melee combat style. In addition, the gloves provide 300% bonuperienceif players train whilst in theWilderness. The gloves last for around 100,000 combat experience, and disintegrate after the player receives all this bonus experience.

Wearing any charged piece ofSacred clay equipment, a reward from theStealing Creationactivity, will grant 100% bonus experience of whatever experience you gain in Defence,Attack,Strength,Magic,RangedandConstitution. Players will always get 24450 bonus experience per piece (including the experience gained in Constitution) no matter how many pieces they equip. If you can earn more than the bonus experience in the amount of time it takes to recharge a Stealing Creation armour piece (15-25 mins a game lasts) then training with Sacred clay equipment is runescape defenceinnefective.

A player can train Defence on theCatapult roomat theWarriors Guild, the player will receive 10 experience per successful defence.

Players receive combat experience from the damage dealt by their Summoning miliars, the skill that receives the experience varies depending on the miliar, except that Constitution always receive 13.3% of the damage done by the miliar.

Some players believe that training Defence is unnecessary and instead focus on the offensive skills of their chosen style(s), such as Attack, Strength, Ranged and Magic. These players, commonly known ascombat pures, generally possess better offensive capabilities than their combat levels suggest, which can be useful forplayer killing. Some of these players leave Defence at level 1 and weariron armour; some train Defence up to level 20 forinitiate armour, and some may raise Defence to level 30 forturmoil, level 40 forrune armour, 42 forVoid Knight equipmentor 45 for aberserker helm.

While potentially effective in player-vs-player combat, this approach could be dangerous for situations which involvefighting against monsters, such as completingSlayerassignments or fightingbossmonsters.

Rather than ignoring Defence altogether, some players train the skill almost exclusively, resulting in a very high Defence level for their combat level, but limited offensive capabilities. These players are known asdefence puresor simply tanks. Some may also train Summoning in order to becomeSummoning tanks, or train both Summoning and Prayer in order to become Safeguard tanks. Additionally some players choose to max out their Defence level first to 99 and then aim to max out Ranged. This results in a Ranged Tank Pure which can be effective in pking.

Almost every single piece of combat equipment (except for the ones that go on the weapon, cape, ring, aura and amulet slots) requires a certain Defence level to wear. Here are links to tables of armour and equipment that require a Defence level to wear:

Defenders- A weapon that goes on the shield slot and provides offensive bonuses while also having an Attack and Defence levels requirement.

You require a certain Defence level to docertain quests. The highest requirement is level 76 Defence forA Clockwork Syringe.

You also need a certain Defence level to complete certain Tasks, they involve, among other things, quest requirements, trying out some equipment at certain places, and thehighest levelled taskbeing to enter the Seers Village Courthouse with the Piety prayer activated.

On2010, anupdateenhanced the defensive values of many pieces of armour with the property above called damage soaking. Any damage above 200 will be absorbed by the armour by the percent indicated in the equipment intece; for example cheap runescape money, a hit of 300 melee damage on a player with 20% melee absorption will only deal 280 damage. (20% of the damage greater than 200 was absorbed). The reason the amount taken off is so small is because only the excess above 200 (in this case the excess is 100 damage) is accounted for, not the first 200 damage.

Heres a formula to show how much damage is soaked is the following:

s =(d-200)(a/100)

s = Damage soaked d = Damage dealt a = Total armour soaking percentage

300-(Damage soaked = (300-200)(20/100)=20)=280

The absorption values of various pieces of armour are tied to thecombat , as opposed to the armours specific bonuses. For example,Dagonhai robes, despite giving no melee defence, absorb a small amount of melee damage.

After achievinglevel 99Defence, players can buy theDefence capefromHarlanthe melee instructor in the building north of thegeneral store. The Defence cape is light blue in colour, and has a cream trim for players who have more than one level 99 skill.

Flat and percentage Defence level bonus dont stack with each other when they add up above the base Defence level. They do, however, stack with the effective defence bonuses of prayers and equipment special effects, as they dont increase the defence level in any way but directly affect the actual chance of dodging an attack when in combat.

Extreme defencepotion – Boosts Defence level by 5 to 26 (5 + 22% of base Defence level rounded down). This item cannot be traded and the only way to obtain it is by it yourself, this requires 90Herblore.

Overloadoffers the same boost as the Extreme defence potion, but is refreshed every 15 seconds for 5 minutes, at which point it wears off completely.

Acaptured Sapphire Glacialis, one of four types ofhuntedbutterflies, can be used on another player in a multicombat area to increase their Defence level by 4 + 15% of that players base Defence level rounded down.

Enhanced excalibursspecial attackboosts Defence by 15%, in addition to healing the player by 200 lifepoints over 10 seconds.

The following bonuses dont increase the players current defence level on the stats tab, but allows the player to be hit less often (see above) and will therefore stack with other boosts:

Leech Defenceboosts Defence by 5%, increasing to 10% over time, while draining the opponents Defence by 10%, increasing to 20% over time.

The spelling defense was used in RuneScape Classic, though it is a British game and defence is the British spelling.

Coming from a member who has already reached 99 Strength, Hiscores: Kearhs, there are a few key places to reach 99 in combat skills, excluding range,runescape gold. magic and prayer.

Members:

For members you have three options, first option is lvl 50 spiders in 3rd lvl of stronghold of security, they have 50 hp, hit low and auto-attack. Therefore you can sit back and relax while the exp flows in (this is my prefered method), second method is Pest Control, although PC has been changed to give a reasonable amount of exp,buy runescape money. it is still a great place to train and make a bit of money, third option are Experiments lvl 25, they have 100 hp and will barely hit at all, Main problems with these monsters is that you have to complete the quest Creature of Frankeinstein, also this training area is usually packed with other players, limiting the amount of monsters you can attack.

Rock crabs are also an alternate method however these can get annoying and highly repetative when attacking them.

Non-Members:

Non-members should first train on hill giants that could be found in the wilderness or beside the cooking guild in a small building and to unlock the small buildings door you will need a brass key that you could buy from the grand exchange. Then i would fight black knights that are level 33 after i am about level 70 once again i would train on lesser demons but remember to bring food, an alternate method to this is to train on lvl 57 ice warriors and lvl 53 ice giants found south-east of lador inside a cavern. Then i would go for greater demons that are in the level 90s. After you get to the greater demons you should have a pretty high level and might even be 99 depending on how much you train a day.

You Could Also Go To The Newish Mini-Game Soul Wars,,, It Is Members Only I Think All You Have To Do Is Win For Zeal Keep Saving Up When You Get About 100 Spend Them On The Strength, Attack, Defence Reward(Which Ever One You Want To Train).(You Go Against Other Players) (Downll You Need High Slayer Say 40+).

the two current best xp methods are:

1)after completing defender of varrok quest you can access armoured zombies they have a st spawn easily AFKable with a altar next to them using a salve amulet (e) full void runescape defenceset and turmoil+soul split you can stay there indefinatly earning 100k/hr xp+ you can improve your results further by using the dragon battle axe special to boost your strength reccomend using a saradomin sword if training strength and a whip+dragon defender is training attack or defense.

2)this method will cost a large amount of money and if you dont know what your doing you will die. however it is the best melee combat experiance in the game currently. to use this method you will need a set of dharoks armour with the axe aswell. you will need 70+ attack strength and defense (to wear the dharoks) and you must have completed the quest monkey madness. you also need at least 43 prayer however this is a bare minimum. i would recommend at least 70 for peity or 95 for turmoil.

what you need

full set of dharoks (with axe) good attack boosting armour (all optional just take the best you have) recommend amulet of fury firecape dragon boots/steadst boots barows gloves. you also need many zamorak brews a monkey greegree and some super antipoisons (this is for the annoying scorpian which will poison you if you dont)

there is no point in taking stat boosting poitions like super atrtack or strengths as the zam brews already do this and the effect does not stack. and a teleport out of some sort

what to do:

take youre fully charged dharoks set alot of zamorak brews, about 6 super antipoisons (4 dose) and a monkey greegree to the temple on ape atoll. before you you enter the island equip everything you need(dharoks armour and gear) and then equip the greegree once you on the island.

go to the monkey temple in monkey form and stand next to the altar there if you do not already have full pray points pray at the altar now. then whilst in monkey form turn on protect/deflect melee and peity or turmoil if you have them (you can set them to quick prayers if its easier) and drink a dose of super antipoison. now you can equip you dharoks axe and you will turn back into human form with protect melee on (never under any circumstances turn protect melee off or will die almost instantly) at this point everything in the temple will start attacking you but as they are all melee only you are safe. now be very careful and dont be risky but drink some zamorak brews (this will damage you) untill you have low health. (when doing this try to get as low health as possible but dont be stupid with it; if you have 100 health and drink a dose then your going to die.) now you can fight the monkey guards (basicly gorillas) that are there using the dharoks set effect (this makes you hit harder the lower your health is). when your pray points get low simply pray at the altar. and if the pesky scorpian poisons you drink a super antipoison (you will need to notice this and act immediatly as with already low health the poison can easily finissh you off). doing this you will earn massive amounts of xp per hour the rate depends on your stats and the gear you wear. when you health get higher on its own take some more zammy brew and when you run out of supplys or your dharoks degrades you will need to bank to restock/recharge.

as a personal not never use and minigames (especially not soul wars) for xp as the xp rates are pathetic. if you are free to play the spider method mentioned above (by the other guy) is the best method for f2p. hope this helped you
